Self-Awareness: Is it Time to Look Inside?

Writer: Nancy A ShenkerNancy A Shenker

Much of the SOS focus this quarter has been on "how you show up."

After all, your public image dramatically impacts all aspects of your life and work. Negative voices in your head can shake your confidence, and too much bravado can turn off some of the people around you.

We (our amazing speakers and facilitators) taught our guests presentation skills, color theory (how we dress and do our faces), and other key "outward-facing" insights.

However, you must know yourself before showing your best self to the outside world.

A great article from Harvard Business Review included this chart illustrating four different self-awareness styles. If you aspire to leadership (whether you're an employee or a founder), you ultimately want to end up in the upper right box in the quadrant.

In April, SOS will host a program specifically for the "lower right quadrant" people. And our Mentorship initiative will help those on the "lower left" start moving into the top right box (if that is, in fact, what they aspire to do).

Learning to solicit (and actively listen to) feedback from those around us is critical to success.

We're not talking about paying close attention to random comments you may get from unknown social media followers or a leader you don't respect. That "noise" can get in the way of effective and productive self-actualization.

Think of self-growth like a customer research project. Asking the people you admire at work and in life and REALLY listening to their feedback (positive and negative) will, ultimately, lead to your becoming a stronger and more effective influence -- at work and at home.

As I've aged, I've grown my ability to embrace feedback. Here's a great guide to learning how to lean into the opinions of the people you trust.

Our goal at SOS is to ensure you end the first half of 2025 with a higher level of self-awareness and confidence. And then, the last six months of the year will be dedicated to what you can do with those superpowers, whether it's starting/scaling your own business, getting that promotion you crave, selling your company, switching careers, or even starting or volunteering for a non-profit (so you can give back once you've gotten great!)
